In this article, I will take you through the steps to install wine on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa). Over the years, there has been many instances where users had the requirement to run windows applications on POSIX based operating systems such as Linux, MacOS and BSD. To fulfill this requirement, a compatibility layer was created that allows windows applications to run on different linux distributions. This compatibility layer is called Wine. It is very widely used by users across the globe. Wine is a free and open source package which can be easily installed on any POSIX based operating systems. Here we will see the steps to install wine on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS based systems.

System.
b) You should have sudo
or root
access to run privileged commands.
c) You should have apt
, dpkg
and wget
utility available in your System.
Step 2: Update Your Server
You need to first sync your system packages with the latest available versions from default Ubuntu repo using sudo apt update
command as below. This will also update the package cache for any recent repo changes done in the system.

b) Using WineHQ Repo
If your system is 64 bit then you need to enable 32 bit architecture using below dpkg
command.
cyberithub@ubuntu:~$ sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
Then you need to create a keyrings directory under /etc/apt to download and add the key.
cyberithub@ubuntu:~$ sudo mkdir -pm755 /etc/apt/keyrings
Now download the key under /etc/apt/keyrings
directory using below wget
command.
cyberithub@ubuntu:~$ sudo wget -O /etc/apt/keyrings/winehq-archive.key https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/winehq.key

Next step is to add the repo in sources.list.d
directory to download and install Wine package from there. This can be done by using below wget
command.
cyberithub@ubuntu:~$ sudo wget -NP /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/dists/focal/winehq-focal.sources

architecture, you need to use wine --version
command as shown below.
cyberithub@ubuntu:~$ wine --version wine-8.0
To check the wine installed version on 64-bit
architecture, you need to use wine64 --version
command as shown below.

Step 5: Launch Notepad Using wine
Now that wine is successfully installed in your system, you can use it to launch any windows applications. In our case, we are launching notepad
application through wine
by using wine notepad
command as shown below.
If you are using 64-bit
architecture, then you can also use wine64 notepad
command as shown below.
Step 6: Uninstall Wine
Once you are done using wine, you can choose to uninstall it from your system by using any of the below given method depending on the architecture you are using and the way you have installed.
NOTE:
a) Remove wine
On a 32-bit architecture, you can use sudo apt remove wine
command to remove the package as shown below.
