How to Install Nemo File Manager on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa) 3

You can check all the options available with nemo utility using nemo --help command.

cyberithub@ubuntu:~$ nemo --help
Usage:
nemo [OPTION…] [URI...]

Browse the file system with the file manager

Help Options:
 -h, --help Show help options
 --help-all Show all help options
 --help-gtk Show GTK+ Options

Application Options:
-c, --check Perform a quick set of self-check tests.
--version Show the version of the program.
-g, --geometry=GEOMETRY Create the initial window with the given geometry. Examples: nemo --geometry=+100+100, nemo --geometry=600x400, nemo --geometry=600x400+100+100.
-n, --no-default-window Only create windows for explicitly specified URIs.

 --display=DISPLAY X display to use

Step 7: Set Nemo as Default File Browser

Before setting Nemo as default file browser, always check currently set file browser by running xdg-mime query default inode/directory command so that you can always revert back to the previous one whenever needed.

cyberithub@ubuntu:~$ xdg-mime query default inode/directory
org.gnome.Nautilus.desktop

Now change default file browser to nemo by using xdg-mime default nemo.desktop inode/directory application/x-gnome-saved-search command as shown below.

cyberithub@ubuntu:~$ xdg-mime default nemo.desktop inode/directory application/x-gnome-saved-search

You can verify the changes by querying again the currently set file browser using xdg-mime query default inode/directory command as shown below.

cyberithub@ubuntu:~$ xdg-mime query default inode/directory
nemo.desktop

If you are looking to revert back file browser to the previous Gnome Nautilus then you need to use xdg-mime default org.gnome.Nautilus.desktop inode/directory application/x-gnome-saved-search command as shown below.

cyberithub@ubuntu:~$ xdg-mime default org.gnome.Nautilus.desktop inode/directory application/x-gnome-saved-search

Verify the changes again by using xdg-mime query default inode/directory command as shown below.

cyberithub@ubuntu:~$ xdg-mime query default inode/directory
org.gnome.Nautilus.desktop

Step 8: Uninstall Nemo File Manager

Although I won't recommend but still if you would like to remove nemo file manager from your system then you have to run sudo apt remove nemo command as shown below. You can also remove all the dependencies by using --auto-remove switch. But you need to be careful in using this switch as sometimes it might remove some dependencies which are used by some other active application running in your System.

cyberithub@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt remove nemo
[sudo] password for cyberithub:

The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
cinnamon-desktop-data cinnamon-l10n fonts-lato gist hddtemp hwdata inxi libcinnamon-desktop4 libgail-3-0 libnemo-extension1 libruby2.7 libxapp1 nemo-data
rake ruby ruby-json ruby-minitest ruby-net-telnet ruby-power-assert ruby-test-unit ruby-xmlrpc ruby2.7 rubygems-integration tree xapps-common
Use 'sudo apt autoremove' to remove them.
The following packages will be REMOVED:
nemo nemo-fileroller
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 2 to remove and 2 not upgraded.
After this operation, 4,834 kB disk space will be freed.
