In this article, we will see how to solve add-apt-repository: command not found
error. add-apt-repository is a free and open source utility to add PPA repository on Ubuntu/Debian based systems. Sometimes it is possible that when you try to add a PPA repo to download and install a package from it, you might end up getting add-apt-repository: command not found
error on the output. Something like this happened to me as well when I tried adding ppa:unit193/encryption
repo on my Ubuntu 22.04 LTS
system. This can usually happen due to several reasons. Here we will see all the possible reasons and solutions that you may try to deal with this error.

As I was explaining, when I tried to add ppa:unit193/encryption
repository using sudo add-apt-repository ppa:unit193/encryption -y
command on my Ubuntu 22.04 LTS
system then I noticed sudo: add-apt-repository: command not found
error on the output as shown below. For you, it may be different repo on some other Ubuntu/Debian system.
cyberithub@ubuntu:~$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:unit193/encryption -y [sudo] password for cyberithub: sudo: add-apt-repository: command not found
While the above error could occur due to several reasons but most of the time it occurs due to unavailability of add-apt-repository
utility on your system. So to fix the above error, you have to install software-properties-common
package on your system by using sudo apt install software-properties-common
command as shown below. This will download and install the package from default Ubuntu repo along with all its dependencies.

You may be wondering why we are installing software-properties-common
package instead of add-apt-repository
utility. It is simply because add-apt-repository
comes in packaged with software-properties-common
so we have to install this package to get add-apt-repository
utility.
After successful installation, if you now try to add PPA repo again then this time you will notice that you are able to add it successfully as shown below. This confirms that add-apt-repository
is working as expected and hence the error is successfully resolved.
cyberithub@ubuntu:~$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:unit193/encryption -y PPA publishes dbgsym, you may need to include 'main/debug' component Repository: 'deb https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/unit193/encryption/ubuntu/ jammy main' Description: https://www.veracrypt.fr/ VeraCrypt - Open source disk encryption with strong security for the Paranoid, based on TrueCrypt. Sometimes it is also possible that even though you have installed add-apt-repository
utility on your system, still you are getting the same error. This can usually happen when you installed the utility in some customized location instead of in system defined binary location such as /usr/bin
. To solve this problem, you can add the customized location to PATH
environment variable.
export PATH=$PATH:/path/to/add-apt-repository
It is however important to keep in mind that above changes are temporary and is local to current session only. To make the changes permanent, you have to add an entry in either ~/.profile
or ~/.bashrc
file. Then logout and login to the system to update the changes. This should solve your problem.
